The rule of thumb in Germany: from O to O — from October to Easter, winter tyres belong on your car. At temperatures below 7 °C, winter tyres offer significantly better grip than summer tyres.
Summer tyres should be fitted by the end of March or early April at the latest, as soon as there is no longer a risk of frost. Winter tyres wear faster in warm temperatures and increase the braking distance.
Watch the tread depth: 1.6 mm is the legal minimum, but experts recommend at least 3 mm for summer tyres and 4 mm for winter tyres. If your tread is worn, it is time for new tyres.
